Mississauga’s Perfect Couple? We Sure Are!

Ok, I know it’s been AGES since I’ve posted anything, but I have lots ot share! Work is going great. Wedding planning is just about all done. I have TONS of photos from our trip up. I got a flat tire coming back from Ottawa on the weekend (changing a tire in -7 temps on the side of the 401 ain’t fun!). Liz and I went to New York and Dublin back in October. Saw Chicago on Broadway, and it was amazing!

And the biggest, most important thing? Liz and I are contestants in the Mississauga’s Perfect Couple competition - it’s run by the Mississauga News, and the winners get a $5000 honeymoon. What with paying for a wedding on our own and buying a house in the next 7 months, that honeymoon sure would come in handy! If you could vote for us, I’d really appreciate it! You just have to go to the perfect couple website, register your email, fill out a stupid questionnaire (I just picked the first answer from every category) and vote for Liz and Ryan. How’s everybody else been holding up over the last 5 months or so?

Cyprus Pics, finally!

Girne Harbour Dcember 2006

I finally finished processing and uploading all my Cyprus pics this week… Only took me like a month! Hehehe…

Yummy new lens!

Ok… so, you may recall that back in July I got a new camera. And in my Year in Review I mentioned not getting the 18-200mm VR lens. Well, as I’m sure you can guess by now, I finally got it! I used my Christmas money, and and some anticipated birthday money, and voila! Sexy new 18-200mm lens. But not only is it amazing, with the VR goodness, it also has the crazy AF-S internal focusing system, which is SO fast and SO quiet. It’s quite a shocking upgrade from my previous. But really, it’s all about the VR. Check out a quick sample I did…

Taken with my old Sigma 70-300mm lens… 70mm, f/4, 1/6s:
No VR

Taken with the new hotness lens… 70mm, f/5, 1/3s:
VR is amazing.

Now, I know that the second one still isn’t perfectly sharp, but bear in mind that the general rule of thumb to avoid camera shake, at 70mm on my camera, is that the shutter speed should be greater than 1/105s. So, this shot is basically *5 stops slower*, with an additional narrower aperture as well. I am absolutely blown away by this lens.

Buy my book!

Ok, not *my* book technically, but you can buy the book with one of my pictures in it, which is soon to hit presses. Wooo! It actually looks like a kinda interesting coffee table book too, so it’s cool that my free copy is on its way! :)

Update: This is the photo that got included in the book.

Gig Shots

DSC_0390 01

Last week I went to see Eimear’s brother’s band, The Chakras (their webpage is being created at the moment, so that link is to their MySpace page, which has sample music. The new single is remarkably good). Since I’d just gotten my 50mm f/1.8 Nikon lens, I thought it’d be a great chance to try out some low light photography. It was an interesting experience, and I spent a lot of time fumbling around with different settings trying to make it easier to take shots. The light was pretty low at Whelan’s, with occasional insanely bright flashes, which made for some interesting attempts at metering/catching shots. I ended up taking something like 160+ shots. There’s only 108 in my photoset (many of which could probably also go) because about 1/3 of my shots were either completely underexposed or completely overexposed. It was a lot of fun though, and the music was pretty rockin’. One thing I noticed, though: hipster dancing. is. so. weird.

A hack that I will never do to my own camera

Nikon D50 Infrared conversion. Very, very cool stuff, but not something I would be even remotely comfortable in doing. :)

New camera!

D50 Self Portrait 02

So, this weekend I got my new Nikon D50. I ended up just getting it with the basic 18-55mm kit lens, which doesn’t get the best reviews, but will do me fine for a while. This camera is RETARDEDLY popular right now, which was shown by the fact that there was only a single black D50 available in all of Dublin (ok, in all of downtown Dublin, at the reasonably priced shops). I absolutely LOVE it! So far I only have 45 shots taken with it in my Flickr stream (out of 140 taken total), I plan on having many, MANY more :) An interesting thing I noted, as well, is that the new camera seems a bit more “widescreen” than my Ixus 55 is. The ixus produces images with a 4:3 (1.33:1) aspect ratio, whereas the D50 is a 188:125 (1.504:1) aspect ratio. I wonder how they decide these things?

Selling my camera!

That’s right! Since I got my new Ixus 55 for my birthday/Christmas, I haven’t had much need for my old Nikon 5400. That camera is an amazing camera, with tons of manual options, but it just doesn’t have the SLR punch that I’m looking for (not to mention, no interchangeable lenses). So, I’m auctioning it off (note, auction doesn’t go “live” for another 7 hours or so, and thus might not be viewable). I’m going to use the cash I make from the auction to put towards a nifty new DSLR camera. I’m still undecided as to which camera I’m going to get (as this Photojunkie Mailbag post will attest), but I’m leaning more towards the Nikon D50 with the kit lens that comes with the Nikon D70s. Except for megapixels, you get a bit more camera for your buck. So, if anybody is looking for a decent “prosumer” camera (lots of SLR functionality, no interchangeable lenses and much smaller), give my auction a peek! :)

Snow!

feb282006snowdublin2

It snowed yesterday. Weee! I mean sure, it only snowed for about an hour, and 20 minutes later all the snow was melted. But it was still cool to see some snow on the ground in February. And it felt like a *real* Canadian winter, because I was feeling sick as a dog too. Not sure what I’ve caught, but a couple guys were off last week so maybe I caught what they had? I’m still achey and foggy-headed today, but I’m still at work. I’m a trooper, dammit!

I am a bit into the gadget porn…

Yesterday, my new Canon Ixus 55 arrived in the mail. Oh. My. God. It is AWESOME! I was kinda pissed, because the mailperson left the Amazon box just SITTING in the building’s entrance… Yes, the entrance was locked to the outside world, but all it would have taken would be one pizza delivery boy on his way out for it to disappear in an instant. At any rate, here are some pictures comparing the size of it to my RAZR phone (which, itself, is ridiculously small and light):

Thanks for the birthday and Christmas present, mom and Rachel!

Happy birthday to me!

Oh man… so excited! Ok, I know my birthday isn’t technically till next month. However, due to the fact that I want to use my birthday present on my trip to Rome (which is happening before my birthday), I had to get my birthday present early! You see, I am buying myself a Canon Ixus 55 camera! And I’m not technically buying it for myself, really it’s a present from my mom and Rachel. They bought me the Amazon.co.uk gift cards that I’m using to buy it, you see! I’ve done a TON of research on the available cameras in this genre (ultra-compact) and it seems like the Canon is the one for me. It’s also known as the SD450 Digital Elph at home. I can’t wait till it arrives! :)

Mmmm… Flickr Tools…

Ever since I saw an Engadget post about creating comic style word balloons on photos for Macs (actually, it may have been Download Squad, but it’s all the same, really), I’ve wanted to be able to do it with my own photos. Sadly, I could never find the Windows equivalent! Well, Flagrant Disregard’s Flickr Tools have come to my rescue! You can put word baloons on your photos, make them into faux magazine covers or movie posters, among a ton of other things! It’s immensely cool. I even did two photos of Matt just for fun (and because I figured they would make him laugh).

Note: for those of you who don’t know me, just to be clear, I am not trying to be insulting towards gays, or saying that being gay is a bad thing, and I’m not really calling Matt gay. But we were doing that whole “You know how I know you’re gay?” thing from 40 Year Old Virgin all week and I couldn’t resist when I saw this picture of him wearing Liz’s slippers. And the “You shut your filthy mouth!” thing is a sort of inside joke, which came from this conversation on New Year’s Day:

Matt: “I can’t believe I’ve walked almost 50 feet and I don’t have a coffee yet”
Eoin: “Well, you’re out in the fresh air, and that’s just about as good as coffee”
Ryan, pretending to be Matt in an angry tone: “You shut your filthy mouth!”
Matt and Ryan: *laugh uncontrollably*

London Baby!

Sorry for the sparse posting lately. I tend to have the problem where I know I want to blog about something in particular, and if that thing ends up being big, then it blocks all other blogging.

Having said that, here’s what’s been blocking me this week: London baby! Liz and I headed off to London for a 3 day weekend last weekend, and had a BLAST. The pictures are here, but I’ll break the trip down into days, in order to make it a bit easier on myself:

Friday:
Liz and I were flying out at 9:50, meaning that we had to aim to get to the airport around 7:50. Which meant leaving the house at 7:00. AM. Ooog. Traffic was pretty nasty, due to it being rainy (you’d think that people in Ireland would know how to drive in the rain. It’s the default weather for this country, dammit! Any way, arrived at the long term parking lot sometime around 8:15. No worries, Aer Lingus has a lovely self-check-in system that worked like a charm. Pretty uneventful flight, a bit bumpy on landing cuz it was quite windy out, but otherwise no worries. Hopped on the tube, and made our way to the Kensington Close Hotel, where we would be staying for the weekend. A GORGEOUS hotel, so close to the High Street Kensington stop, I would definitely stay there again. The room was miniscule by North American standards, but realistically we didn’t need anything more than a bed and a bathroom. From there it was onto the tube again for a trip to the Big Bus, to pick up our tickets. We hopped on the bus, took the red route all around London. This bus tour is a FANTASTIC value. You get a great tour, see TONS of London, and it was a GREAT value. After that, we headed back to the hotel cuz Liz had to get ready for the Backstreet Boys concert. That’s right, we went to London to see the Backstreet Boys, big whoop, wanna fight about it? The concert was in Wembley - and incidentally, I had no idea that Wembley was THE GHETTO. What the hell?!? I have to admit that I didn’t *hate* it. I didn’t *love* it either, but some of the songs were at least enjoyable. I could have done without the 3 teenaged girls behind me who screeched at jet-plane-volume levels every time AJ came up on the screen. Jesus. From there we made our way home, and pretty much passed out. Oh, and Liz absolutely LOVED the concert.

Saturday:
Sleep, wonderful sleep! Liz and I slept in till about 9:30. Not as late as I would have liked, but we wanted to have breakfast before we went to Buckingham Palace to see the changing of the guard. We went up to Notting Hill to get breakfast, but had NO IDEA where we were so we ended up going to a bagel place for breakfast and hopped back on the tube. Got off at Victoria Station and watched most of the changing of the guard, then got bored. Walked down to St James’ tube station, hopped on the train over to the Tower of London. I had no idea that the “Tower” is really more of a fort/palace. How about that. (Other things I thought I knew about London that are wrong: The big fancy drawbridge in London is Tower Bridge, not London Bridge; Big Ben is just the name of the bell in the Parliament Clock Tower). Toured around the Tower, saw the Crown Jewels (pretty impressive, if a bit repetitive), saw some giant ass ravens, and left. Next up was our cruise on the Thames, which was included free with our Big Bus ticket. However, nobody even checked our tickets as we went onto the boat, so realistically we probably could have done it for free. This was probably my favourite part of the trip - the guide was HILARIOUS. And they’re not actually paid as tour guides, they’re just crew on the boat who do guide duty because the tour company is too cheap to hire real guides. So I tipped him a pound because he cracked me up. From there we did a fair bit of wandering… From the Parliament buildings up to Trafalgar Square, up through Leicester Square to Soho and Chinatown, across to Oxford Circus, down Regent Street to Piccadilly Circus. We checked out Lillywhites in Piccadilly Circus, cuz they had a HUGE sale going on, but couldn’t find anything. Then we took the tube over to Covent Garden, where we had dinner at the Covent Garden Grill. Lovely dinner, SO yummy. From there we took a bit of a walk over to Leicester (pronounced “Lester”, incidentally, just like Gloucester is pronounced “Gloster”) Square and had a hot chocolate, then hit the tube again to head to the London Eye. London is GORGEOUS at night, especially St Paul’s Cathedral and Parliament. Didn’t get any really decent pictures though, because the Eye is constantly moving, and it’s enclosed in glass, so if you want a good picture you have to turn off your flash, which then requires a long shutter speed, which results in blurry blurry because you’re moving. Oh well, I have pictures in my BRAIN. Then we went home, and passed out early again. :)

Sunday:
Sleeep! Got to sleep in finally, and didn’t really accomplish much. Had a lovely breakfast at the Muffin Man near the hotel, which was YUMMY. Then walked through the Kensington Palace Gardens and Hyde Park to the tube, because we had to catch our flight at 3:50. Only, it turns out, the tube was all buggered along the District line, so we ended up having to take a seriously roundabout route to get to Paddington station, and there we caught the express train to the airport (normally like 16 pounds, but because there was some issue with the tube we could use a 6 pound daily travelcard… yay!). Flew home on another uneventful flight (incidentally, from now on I am always flying emergency door row if I can. The LEG room! Wow!), bus to the car, and drove Liz into town (she was going to the DUBLIN Backstreet Boys concert). Drove home and veged out for a couple hours. Sweet sweet vegetation. Yay!

So that was my trip. In case you’ve forgotten, pictures are in this Flickr Gallery. Enjoy!

Camera… Toss?

Camera toss. Throw your camera in the air while taking a picture. That takes some serious cojones, my friend. Wow. I’ll pass.
