The Peekaboo Paradox

This Washington Post article entitled The Peekaboo Paradox is a long read, but 100% worthwhile. It’s the story of Eric Knaus, otherwise known as the Great Zuchini. “The best children’s entertainer in DC” - he makes $300 per performance, and does about 7-8 per weekend. It’s an astoundingly well written piece, and believe me, much more interesting than you would expect.

Shopgirl… wait - Steve Martin is still making good movies??

So, last night Liz and I went to the movies. I passed on Cheaper by the Dozen 2, for a Steve Martin flick that I had heard actual good things about: Shopgirl. This movie was SO good… Steve Martin excellently played a middle-aged sugah-daddy to Claire Danes‘ artist-who-works-at-Saks-to-pay-the-bills-and-is-on-anti-depressants. Jason Schwartzman played the kooky-but-really-has-no-idea-how-girls-work graphic artist to a tee, he was SO ridiculously awkward you just had to root for him. Apparently this is based on a novella written by Martin himself, so I really think I’d like to read that now too. If this is still playing in a theatre near you, go and see it! Hell, if you guys out there think it’s just a chick-flick with no redeeming, I give you 4 words that are really all you need: Claire Danes’ Naked Butt. That’s right. So your girlfriend (and you, if you like chick flicks as I do) gets a really good quirky movie about relationships and stuff, and you get some eye candy! :)

Woohoo! I’m on BoingBoing!

That’s right baby! I sent in an update to Cory about his online money tracking as virus simulation post from this morning, and I got myself up on the front page! That’s so cool! I doubt it will cause much of a traffic spike, but hey, it’s SOMETHING. :) Incidentally, I *love* those money tracking games… I had a WheresGeorge account when I was living in San Francisco, and a WheresWilly account that I used a long time ago in Canada. Now I have one for Euro notes, too! Weeee! The only thing I find with these bad boys is that it can be difficult to remember to enter all your bills, AND to mark them all with the site info so that people will know to enter them when *they* get them. :)

An update to… IMDB’s functionality?

One of my favourite sites is IMDB (the Internet Movie Database, for those of you who have just discovered the internet). I will hit IMDB at least once when I am watching TV on a given night, usually, just to see “Hey, what else has that guy been in?” because frankly, I’m a big geek. Well, on another foray into IMDB today, (I was looking up Ron Livingston, because I knew the name but couldn’t place him… turns out he’s Berger from Sex and the City, and also Nixon from Band of Brothers) (and I was looking him up because he was mentioned on Go Fug Yourself) I noticed they have a KICKASS new feature: they list each episode of TV shows as their own separate titles now! So if I want to look up the “Worst Episode Ever” episode of The Simpsons, no problem! They also list each individual season on the actual The Simpsons entry for IMDB as well. That is friggin awesometastic. And rather than having it all the way down at the bottom of each actor’s page, they now list individual TV show guest appearances right in their filmography! (Look at Kelsey Grammar for example, you can see his Sideshow Bob appearances)

Yes, I am a super nerd, but I still think it’s a kickass function and a great idea, finally improving what was already a great site.

About what I expected…

So, the Tories have won a minority government. Are you happy now, Canada? You’ve guaranteed another year or so of effectively useless government. Hurrah! The best part of that CBC headline though: “vows to work with parties”. Well DUH. It’s not like he has a choice! Some interesting results (to me): Mississauga (where I grew up) voted all Liberal… Toronto voted almost entirely Liberal/NDP (although Olivia Chow[NDP] kicked out incumbent Tony Ianno in Trinity-Spadina, wooohoooo!)… Quebec voted primarily BQ, British Columbia voted mostly Conservative (I wonder if their Liberal provincial government had anything to do with that? umm… RTFA Ryan… The Conservatives actually *lost* 5 seats in BC!)… the prairies voted primarily conservative, surprise surprise! :) All in all, an interesting enough election. I’m not all that surprised that Harper won, and I’m glad Martin is stepping down as leader of the Liberals. Even if he had nothing to do with AdScam™, there’s too much stigma surrounding him for any effective leadership to be done. We’ll see what happens now, I guess.

Breakfast on Pluto

Went to see Breakfast on Pluto on Friday. What a FANTASTIC movie! Cillian Murphy was wonderful as Patrick “Kitten” Braden… and freakily feminine. Absolutely worth seeing, even if you are a bit uncomfortable with the whole transvestite angle. It’s really just a story about a boy trying to find his mother during the tempestuous IRA years of the 60’s and 70’s. 5 thumbs up!

Get out and vote!

If you’re Canadian, that is. Personally, I support the Liberals, and I’ve already mailed in my vote, but even if you don’t support who I vote for, get out and vote, dammit!

Steelers and Seahawks in the Super Bowl??

What the hell? Where have I been this year? It sounds like I missed a great NFL season. Grrr! Oh well, hopefully I’ll at least get to see the Superbowl!

I am a bit into the gadget porn…

Yesterday, my new Canon Ixus 55 arrived in the mail. Oh. My. God. It is AWESOME! I was kinda pissed, because the mailperson left the Amazon box just SITTING in the building’s entrance… Yes, the entrance was locked to the outside world, but all it would have taken would be one pizza delivery boy on his way out for it to disappear in an instant. At any rate, here are some pictures comparing the size of it to my RAZR phone (which, itself, is ridiculously small and light):

Thanks for the birthday and Christmas present, mom and Rachel!

I’d like 6000 bagels please

This is so totally something I would say. :)

Just Like Hugh

Just Like Hugh

Found this on Flickr… Celebrity face matcher! Apparently I look just like Hugh Grant! :)

Glendalough!

(That’s pronounced Glen-duh-lock, by the way)

On Saturday, Liz and I got up and mosied (moseyed?) on down to Glendalough for a bit of a wander. Glendalough is absolutely GORGEOUS, I must say. It is an ancient religious area, with two beautiful lakes nestled into the mountains. Truly gorgeous. Pictures of Glendalough here.

Happy birthday to me!

Oh man… so excited! Ok, I know my birthday isn’t technically till next month. However, due to the fact that I want to use my birthday present on my trip to Rome (which is happening before my birthday), I had to get my birthday present early! You see, I am buying myself a Canon Ixus 55 camera! And I’m not technically buying it for myself, really it’s a present from my mom and Rachel. They bought me the Amazon.co.uk gift cards that I’m using to buy it, you see! I’ve done a TON of research on the available cameras in this genre (ultra-compact) and it seems like the Canon is the one for me. It’s also known as the SD450 Digital Elph at home. I can’t wait till it arrives! :)

I want an XBox 360!

Ok, I know I won’t get one for a while, and I don’t *really* want one right now, because they’re way overpriced right now. However, check out the screenshots comparing PGR3 to real life locations in Japan! Truly impressive stuff, I must say!

Wordpress 2.0!

I didn’t even know that WP 2.0 had been released!  How about that!  So I’ve upgraded my blog (as well as Rachel’s) to use that, and the Akismet spam plugin.  We’ll see how she does! :)

Desperate Housewives has got me by the brain!

For her Christmas stocking, I got Liz Desperate Housewives - The Complete First Season on DVD. She had actually already seen all of season 1, but I never had and we had talked about renting it and watching it together. I figured it would cost just as much to buy it as rent it (and I’m pretty sure I was right), and this way we could take our time in watching it. Well, we sorta blasted through season 1 (with an epic weekend of 7 episodes last weekend) and I am hooked. We started watching season 2 (which we got from a friend, and also via Newsgroups and Bittorrent) and we are already blasting through that one (since Sunday, we’ve watched 5 episodes!). The show is good, I am not going to try to pretend like I don’t like it. Although some of the situations that Susan gets herself into are *seriously* cringe-inducing.

New Year’s Resolution: Try to blog more!

I know, I’ve been a bad blogger. I seem to have trouble finding the time to blog lately, or rather finding the motivation. I’m going to aim to do one blog post a day, regardless of whether it’s good or not, just to start getting back into the swing of things. It might be useless, it might be interesting, I don’t really care! It’ll be something, dammit. :)

Mmmm… Flickr Tools…

Ever since I saw an Engadget post about creating comic style word balloons on photos for Macs (actually, it may have been Download Squad, but it’s all the same, really), I’ve wanted to be able to do it with my own photos. Sadly, I could never find the Windows equivalent! Well, Flagrant Disregard’s Flickr Tools have come to my rescue! You can put word baloons on your photos, make them into faux magazine covers or movie posters, among a ton of other things! It’s immensely cool. I even did two photos of Matt just for fun (and because I figured they would make him laugh).

Note: for those of you who don’t know me, just to be clear, I am not trying to be insulting towards gays, or saying that being gay is a bad thing, and I’m not really calling Matt gay. But we were doing that whole “You know how I know you’re gay?” thing from 40 Year Old Virgin all week and I couldn’t resist when I saw this picture of him wearing Liz’s slippers. And the “You shut your filthy mouth!” thing is a sort of inside joke, which came from this conversation on New Year’s Day:

Matt: “I can’t believe I’ve walked almost 50 feet and I don’t have a coffee yet”
Eoin: “Well, you’re out in the fresh air, and that’s just about as good as coffee”
Ryan, pretending to be Matt in an angry tone: “You shut your filthy mouth!”
Matt and Ryan: *laugh uncontrollably*

This is why I love Kevin Smith

He has a (not frequently updated) blog, where he talks about having an anal fissure
